Announcing ... Trifecta Books!

I'm very excited to make the formal announcement that I have started up my own publishing company, Trifecta Books!

Why Trifecta Books?

The publishing industry has changed drastically over the last ten years, with the largest portion of that change taking place in the last five. More readers than ever are abandoning their desire to read print books and are instead purchasing e-books by the droves. E-books are popular because they are less expensive, can be obtained instantly, and don’t take up space in the reader’s home. For the price of one print book, a reader can buy three or four e-books, and thousands of books can be stored in a device smaller than one novel.

In addition, authors are finding traditional publishing to be a dinosaur. Publishing houses are still offering the royalty rates of years gone by and insisting on contracts that are blatantly unfair to the author. They have forgotten that without the author, they have no business to run. Consequently, more and more authors are choosing to self-publish, and that does work out well for many of them. However, the majority never achieve the success they seek, and they struggle to obtain good editing, eye-catching covers, and proper marketing.

Trifecta Books, LLC has been established upon the premise that publishing should be a partnership between the author and the publisher. Each should have a say in the outcome of the final product. Each should reap the rewards of the hard work that has gone into the production. Each should feel as though the relationship is mutually beneficial, and if a time comes when that relationship ceases to benefit both parties, the contract should be easy to dissolve.

The goal of Trifecta is to merge the benefits of self-publishing and the advantages of traditional publishing into one cohesive unit. Trifecta offers competitive royalty rates, quality cover design, meticulous editing, and targeted marketing techniques to help bring the book to the attention of a nationwide audience. Although the main focus is on e-books and online marketing, which is the way the majority of readers shop, we haven’t lost sight of those readers who still prefer to hold a paper book in their hands, and will provide print runs as well. In this way, the authors can feel as though they are reaping the benefits of both worlds. They would have made more money per unit had they self-published, but with the backing of a publishing house, their chances of selling more copies and thereby making more money are increased.

A Disturbing Trend

There seems to be a downward spiral in the quality of content and editing in the books being published today, especially those written for the young adult market. It is becoming more and more difficult for teenage readers to find material that entertains and yet edifies at the same time. Sadly, these themes are trickling down to younger readers as well, sometimes introducing them to content they weren’t ready for.

Vision

The idea for Trifecta Books came about as I contemplated many facets of concern in the publishing industry, some of which were stated above but bear repeating here.

·      Authors are often treated unfairly, either through imbalanced distribution of profit or through unrealistic contractual obligations. Without the author, the publisher has no business, and yet many publishers do not recognize this symbiotic dependency. There are, of course, exceptions, and many fine publishing houses strive to be balanced in their contracts.
·        Many publishers have turned away from a focus on quality editing and superior content and instead are riding the waves of fashion and fad, often sacrificing story for sensationalism. Again, there are exceptions.
·    Many authors feel that there is no point in striving for excellence because it won’t be appreciated, and so they have allowed themselves to stop seeking to hone their craft and instead are seeking ways to make a splash to get a publisher’s attention. Some of the authors who do seek to improve themselves can feel as though that effort is wasted.
·      The moral content of the novels currently available is declining at the same rate we see the moral tenor of the world declining. Our teenagers are reading about darkness and extolling it as light. They are excusing acts of immoral behavior as being normal. Their understanding of terms like “integrity” and “honor” are being skewed by the lack of positive role models in their media.

The vision for Trifecta is simple—a publishing company that seeks out the best in young adult literature, edits it well, and presents it beautifully. We need more clean young adult literature on the market. As the company grows, we will add other arms addressing the needs of the LDS market, children’s books, middle-grade books, and so forth. But because the need is so great for the youth at this time, that is where Trifecta will begin.

Trifecta Books has already established a relationship with Brigham Distribution, the second-largest distributor in the state of Utah. Brigham has agreed to carry Trifecta Books’ products and represent them to bookstores locally as well as nationwide. This includes, but is not limited to, Costco, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, and independent bookstores everywhere. E-books will be handled by Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com.

My publishing schedule is full and I'm not accepting submissions at this time, but I will be soon. If you'd like to learn more about Trifecta, please visit the website.

Guest Post: Drienie Hattingh on Christy Monson's New Release, Love, Hugs, and Hope

Author Christy Monson has a new children's book out, and her good friend Drienie Hattingh was on hand to write us up a review about it. Take it away, Drienie.

LOVE, HUGS, AND HOPE:
When Scary Things Happen
Author: Christy Monson

This delightfully illustrated self-help children’s book is a must-have for parents to share with their children after traumatic events. In a very direct but kind way, Christy Monson’s words will help children get through difficult times.

Christy was born in Medford Oregon, and now lives in Ogden, Utah, with her husband. Through her husband’s work, they travelled a lot and lived in several places in the United States—Utah, Idaho, Michigan, California, Nevada, and finally back in Utah. During this process, they raised six children. After Christy’s children were in school, she went back to UNLV to become a marriage and family therapist, setting up a practice in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The first draft of Love, Hugs, and Hope: When Scary Things Happen took Christy about a week to write. She felt the need to write this little book after several heartbreaking incidents in America—the school shooting at Sandy Hook, and shortly after when a gunman shot up the Clackamas Towne Center in Oregon. Christy’s daughter, son-in-law, and two granddaughters live about three miles from the center.

Even though parents turned off all media, Christy knew they couldn’t protect children by keeping the truth from them. Children needed to share their feelings and find hope in the difficult world surrounding them during such traumatic events.

As these thoughts manifested in Christy’s mind after these catastrophes, she felt something had to be written to help parents and children work through such disasters … and the idea for this little book was born.

Christy wrote the book with one primary idea in mind and that was to answer the question: What do you do when scary things happen? The result is a delightfully illustrated little book all about love and light that will help children everywhere to process hurt and anger and help them heal from tragedies. The book is not only meant for major disasters like the ones mentioned earlier, but it can be helpful to parents and children in the event of the loss of a friend or a grandparent and even the death of a beloved pet.

To my mind, the book accomplishes what the author set out to do and so eloquently states in her book: “Love chases away hate and light chases away the dark.”

Guest Post: Drienie Hattingh on Christy Monson's New Release, Becoming Free

One of the things I love best about the writing community is the way that authors promote each other and provide a network of support. When Christy Monson announced the release of her new book, her friend Drienie Hattingh was right there to help spread the word. I now turn the time over to Drienie for her thoughts about Christy's book.

BECOMING FREE:
A Woman’s Guide to Internal Strength
Author: Christy Monson

Christy Monson’s past career as a marriage and family therapist in Las Vegas, Nevada, no doubt inspired her to write her latest book, Becoming Free. It took Christy a year to write this worthwhile self-help adult book.

Becoming Free is all about the clients Christy helped in her practice. Of course, she did not use real names, but the stories are all true. It is clear to see that the author gave each case a lot of thought before writing this book. Every "story" is a life lesson as the author concentrates on what motivated those clients who improved their quality of life.

Christy outlined the healing process of every case, from identifying the problem to solving it. She walks us through every case with wisdom, compassion, and sometimes humor. I came away from each chapter feeling positively influenced, even when some stories did not end well.

I appreciate the concept conveyed throughout: It is important not only to give, but also to receive.

I was really inspired by the book, knowing that there just might be hope for every difficult situation women face in their everyday lives. The author makes it clear that goals can be achieved if one goes about problems the right way.

Each case/chapter read like a story. I found myself looking forward to the next and the next story. Reading the book, I felt it might just be possible to find a deeper happiness in life and that we possess more strength than we might think we have to achieve our goals. Sometimes, while reading certain chapters, I said to myself, “If only I knew this when my kids were small or in their teens” or “If only I knew this when I was trying to solve a similar problem in my life.”

The title for this book is perfect. I felt that many of the suggestions to solve problems in these real-life situations could help me in "becoming free."

Through the last couple of years, after reading Christy’s other books, I have come to love her way of writing—filled not only with wisdom and compassion, but also humor.

I agree with Margaret Johansen when she wrote this about Becoming Free: “…just like a recipe book that gives both ingredients and instructions for successful baking, Christy gives both ‘what you need’ and ‘how to do it.'"

There’s so much I love about this book, including the very appropriate quotes from famous people. The quotes strengthen the positive feelings I harvested from each of the ‘stories.’ And the concepts in this book, I feel, can be beneficial to everyone. I appreciated the last section on healing techniques—a compilation of the most effective concepts and procedures Christy gathered over the years in her professional practice.

After reading this book, I came away feeling that the knowledge I gained will help me to live a life filled with peace and positive energy. I will keep this book close to refer to when needed!

Example of one of the cases in the book Becoming Free

procrastinatioN: There are many reasons we procrastinate.

Isabella’s manager at work gave her a project to complete by the end of the week. Isabella worried about it, but didn’t start until the day before it was due. She turned it in the next morning, but she was disappointed with her effort. I never do things good enough, she thought. I’m always a failure.

Our childhood circumstances dictate a personal belief system that we carry with us as we mature. Convictions that worked for us as children may not be helpful for us as adults.

Journal your childhood assumptions
Isabelle believed: I never do things good enough. I’m always a failure.

Rewrite these outdated assumptions as adult affirmations
In order to change these beliefs, you have to change your feelings about yourself. Reprogram your brain to know of your competence and success in life. If your change your thinking, your feelings will follow.

Isabella wrote: I am competent in the workplace. I am successful.

Repeat your adult affirmations often.
Say the statements you write often—when you’re on the way to work or fixing a meal. The more you say them to yourself, the more you will believe them. Bask in your goodness and newfound self-esteem.

Visualize the changes in your life.
See yourself as capable and efficient. The new you is qualified to take on the tasks of each day. Give yourself permission to see these changes.

Pair a negative task with a positive one.
When you have something you really don’t want to do, pair it with a task you love. I don’t enjoy doing the dishes, so I tell myself I can watch my favorite television show or read my book as soon as they are done.

Praise yourself for each small thought change and behavior revision you make. You are worth it. With some concentrated effort your procrastination pattern will be thing of the past.
